About Us

Following a successful vote by 46 elected representatives of the Durham Students’ Union Assembly (ER140) on 25 February 2016, the Durham University Hong Kong Public Affairs and Social Service Society (DUHKPASS) was officially established. Since then, DUHKPASS has grown into a student-run, non-profit society that brings together students with an interest in Hong Kong, public affairs, social issues, current affairs and community engagement.

DUHKPASS aims to promote awareness and discussion of issues affecting Hong Kong, the UK and the wider world, while providing a platform for students to exchange ideas and engage meaningfully with public affairs. We seek to foster an inclusive community where students from different backgrounds can connect, share perspectives and develop a broader understanding of the world around them. Through our activities, we aim to complement members’ academic experience with opportunities for personal, professional and social development.

Throughout the academic year, we organise a diverse range of academic, social, career and community-focused activities, including talks, panel discussions, debates, forums, competitions, networking events, campaigns and volunteering initiatives. These events provide members with opportunities to engage with current affairs, hear from academics and professionals, develop new perspectives and build connections with fellow students and the wider community. We also organise and support activities in both the UK and Hong Kong, reflecting our commitment to contributing to communities beyond Durham.

An important part of our work is building connections across Durham University. DUHKPASS collaborates with other student societies and organisations to organise joint events, campaigns and initiatives, helping to bridge the gap between Hong Kong students and the wider Durham student community. By working alongside students from different backgrounds and disciplines, we seek to create a welcoming platform for collaboration, discussion and shared experiences.

Beyond Durham, DUHKPASS is part of the wider UK Hong Kong PASS network, connecting Hong Kong PASS societies across universities throughout the UK. Through this network, societies collaborate on inter-university flagship events, forums, conferences, social activities and other initiatives. These collaborations allow students to build connections beyond their own universities, exchange ideas and engage collectively with issues relating to Hong Kong and the wider community.

Ultimately, DUHKPASS is committed to providing members with a well-rounded university experience while encouraging students to take an active interest in public affairs, social issues and community service. We strive to create opportunities for students to connect, learn and contribute positively to both the Durham and Hong Kong communities.
